“The workshop has opened a whole new world of seeing through the written word for me; Allegra’s knowledge and generosity kept all of us in awe during this unique atelier. The location added to the enchantment of the mind as well as the senses. Unforgettable.”— Hemant Sagar, fashion designer, New Delhi, India

What to Expect: An Intimate Retreat…

In the mornings, we will meet together in the beautiful garden of the Hotelito, to discuss what makes a good memoir and to explore techniques for infusing your writing with imaginative energy, specificity, and surprise.

In our five days together, we will cover the topics of Authenticity, Narrative, Character, Setting, and Editing/Performance. We will do two or three short timed writings each day, and read them aloud and we will not criticize! All we’re looking for is originality, excitement, places where the writing pops. I believe that most of us write better when we’re not “writing the book.” Try it, and you’ll see what I mean. I guarantee you will be surprised by what you write!

Unlike many creative writing teachers, I believe that critique of writing should not be a spectator sport. The group will not be invited to comment on your actual writing project.

In the afternoons, I will meet with you individually (in a minimum of two one-hour sessions) to help you to the best of my ability with your current or future writing project. We might brainstorm, discuss structure, content, or tone, or troubleshoot specific problems: whatever you need. I can read up to 20 pages of work per participant, more by arrangement.

Aside from your private sessions with me, afternoons are free for writing, swimming in the pool or in the ocean, and exploring the lovely beachside town of Todos Santos. At the end of our morning sessions, I will provide writing prompts for the afternoon, which are entirely optional.

“Allegra has the rare ability to help your writing at two different levels: rational, by analyzing the elements and structure of your memoir, and emotional, by using her capacity to read between the lines, to recognize and empathize with the yelling or whispering of your heart. I learned a lot in her workshop: her lessons were easy to understand and remember but deep and specific on the points where I needed to improve—and delivered with kindness and joy.” — Jamil Mahuad, ex-president of Ecuador and fellow at the Program of Negotiation, Harvard Law School

“I had been a participant in small group experiences in the past and never before have I had such a uniformly positive experience . . . Thank you, Allegra, for sharing your wisdom and your humanness so generously. I feel that I learned so much from you and I am ever grateful for this.” — Tracey Laszloffy, therapist, Connecticut, USA

ABOUT THE HOTELITO

TripAdvisor’s “Best B&B in Mexico” two years running!

The Hotelito’s colorful blend of exotic Mexican color and contemporary architecture has been featured in numerous design magazines during the twelve years since it opened. Situated on the edge of Todos Santos, walking distance from the old mission church in the plaza, it’s close enough to town to enjoy all it has to offer, but quiet and serene in its palm tree oasis.

Owned and run by an Englishwoman, Jenny Armit, the Hotelito comprises four individual casitas, the Hacienda Chilicote with three large bedrooms (ideal for sharing), and a further house with two bedrooms and a kitchenette. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms. Prices vary from $110-$160 per night, including a delicious breakfast.

Each casita has either its own private terrace or private garden, with hammocks and shaded verandah. All rooms have wildly comfortable beds and English linens, wifi, refrigerator, iPod dock and loungers. Gardens full of perfumed plants and a 48-foot saltwater swimming pool make for an irresistible magical place to stay.
