Memoir Writing Workshop at belmond La Residencia, Deia, Mallorca, Spain

October/november 2018

Explore your writing with bestselling author Allegra Huston, author of LOVE CHILD: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found and the novel SAY MY NAME, as well as articles for numerous magazines in the US and the UK. The techniques Allegra teaches in the workshop are focused specifically on memoir but are useful also to writers of fiction, history, and biography. Allegra has taught at universities and private courses around the world, including the UK’s Arvon Foundation, and has edited authors including Jane Goodall, Edna O'Brien, Matthew Parris, Iris Murdoch, Sir James Goldsmith, and Nobel Prize winner Richard Thaler.

In the mornings, we will meet together, on a terrace overlooking the beautiful village of Deia, to discuss specific aspects of storytelling and techniques for generating material. We will do two or three short timed writings and read them aloud. I believe that critique of writing is not a spectator sport, so we are looking only for phrases and ideas that pop! In the afternoons, I will meet with each participant individually (in a minimum of two one-hour sessions) for discussion, exploration, and criticism of your current or future writing project. I can read up to 20 pages of work per participant, more by arrangement.

In our five days together, we will cover the topics of Authenticity, Narrative, Character, Setting, and Editing/Performance.

Aside from your one-on-one sessions with me, afternoons are free for writing, enjoying La Residencia's three swimming pools,  and exploring Deia. At the end of our morning sessions, I will provide writing prompts for the afternoon which will spark further exploration of the day's topic.

My goals in this workshop are to infuse your writing with energy and specificity, to give you constructive advice on the content, structure, and tone of your project, to teach you techniques for editing and performing your work in public, and to send you home feeling confident and energized. I guarantee you will be surprised by what you write!

The workshop begins on a Sunday afternoon, with a welcome tea and introduction by Allegra, followed by a walking tour of Deia with Dr. Jacqueline Waldren, anthropologist and long-term resident of the village. The workshop culminates on the Friday night with a private, formal reading of participants' work and a lavish farewell dinner.
