Memoir Writing Workshop at belmond La Residencia, Deia, Mallorca, Spain

October 22-27, 2017

Explore your memoir writing with bestselling writer Allegra Huston, author of LOVE CHILD: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found and articles for numerous magazines in the US and the UK. An experienced editor and workshop leader, Allegra has taught at universities and private courses around the world (including the UK’s Arvon Foundation) and has worked with authors including Jane Goodall, Edna O'Brien, Matthew Parris, and Iris Murdoch.

The course will consist of five morning workshops devoted to discussion of techniques and generating material. We will do timed writings and read them aloud: looking only for things that pop! I believe that critique of writing is not a spectator sport. More intensive discussion of students’ work will be reserved for one-on-one sessions. These will be conducted in the afternoons, and each student will receive two. I will read up to 20 pages of work by each student, more by arrangement.

My goal in this workshop is to help you bring energy and specificity to your writing, and give you tools for exploring structure and tone. I guarantee you will be surprised by what you write!

The workshop begins on Sunday, October 22, with a welcome tea and introduction by Allegra, followed by a walking tour of Deia with Dr. Jacqueline Waldren, anthropologist and long-term resident of the village. Aside from personal sessions with Allegra, afternoons are free for writing and exploring the pleasures of Deia. The workshop culminates with a farewell dinner and readings from students' work.

ALLEGRA HUSTON – workshop leader

Allegra's bestselling Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found is the story of the making of family out of a fragmented childhood: losing a mother, finding an unexpected father, and discovering a sense of self and security in the shadow of loss and fame. Her first novel, Say My Name, will be published in August 2017 (UK)/January 2018 (US).
