Imaginative Storm Writing Workshops
I am the poster child for the Imaginative Storm technique.
In 2004, my poet friend James Nave asked me to join him in developing what was then called the Writing Salon: a writers’ workshop retreat that grew out of the Artist’s Way Creativity Camps he’d been teaching with Julia Cameron, bestselling author of The Artist’s Way. We were guided by two basic principles:
The imagination will give you gifts, if you let it
Look for energy, not perfection
Over the six years of its life, the Imaginative Storm has developed into an improvisational playroom for the writer’s imagination. Doing this work frees you from your inner critic and from attachment to “how it’s supposed to be.” Time and again, when I was writing Love Child, I found myself turning to Imaginative Storm techniques. Some of my favorite passages in the book are almost word-for-word what the Imaginative Storm threw my way.
